Presentation
The Belém Cultural Centre (also known as CCB) was built at the start of 1988 for the purposes of welcoming the 1992 Portuguese presidency of the European Union and creating a new centre for cultural development and leisure. Designed by architects Vittorio Gregotti (Italy) and Manuel Salgado (Portugal), the CCB took over the space where in 1940 the architect Cottineli Telmo had set up the ‘Pavilion of the Portuguese in the World’ for the Portuguese World Exhibition. The pavilion framed the Praça do Império (Imperial Square), which had been built not long before, on its western side.
In addition to hosting the Berardo Collection, the CCB currently promotes a diversified cultural programme in the areas of music, theatre, dance and literature, such as ‘Dias da Música’ (Musical days), a programme dedicated to classical music and jazz. Located in a privileged area with terraces facing the Tagus, the CCB is an inviting spot for a unique view of the river. There are terrace bars, cafeterias, restaurants, and various shops. On the first Sunday of every month, an antique and handicraft fair also takes place here.
