Mário Pacheco
The Portuguese Guitar and Fado
Presentation
A tireless student of the Portuguese guitar technique and a highly consummate player of this instrument, Mário Pacheco has inevitably moved towards composition and begun to create his own pieces. Songs that he has written have been sung by many fado singers, most notably Amália, Carlos Zel, Paulo de Carvalho, Jorge Fernando, Paulo Bragança, Nuno da Câmara Pereira, Ana Sofia Varela, Carla Pires, Rodrigo Costa Félix, Carolina, Cuca Roseta, Mísia and Mariza. It was this combination of highly-skilled performer and inspired composer (always bearing in mind the way in which he composes the spirit of fado, with its peculiar forms of harmonising and constructing melodies) that led to the release of his first album Um Outro Olhar, a genuine milestone in the history of the Portuguese guitar. The Amália Rodrigues Foundation awarded him the prize for Best Composer, in 2006. The specialist British music magazine Songlines chose A Música e a Guitarra as one of the best albums of World Music in 2007. A concert that is full of inspiration, and which invites the audience to engage with fado through one of its leading figures.
