Presentation
The Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and the conductor Pedro Amaral will start off the 2015/2016 Music Season at the CCB’s Main Auditorium with an irresistible programme. The immediate highlight is Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, the least epic of the four symphonies that the German composer left us, and perhaps the one in which he revealed most about himself as an individual. The determined nature of the opening chords turns out to be rather deceptive, with the prevailing impression thereafter being that of the nostalgic beauty of the third movement, one of the best known passages of the whole orchestral repertoire. Brahms’ music is joined here by two works of great effect, in which one can also sense the more personal aspects of their composers. In the Manfred Overture, Schumann provided us with a musical portrait of the figure of a romantic hero immersed in the contradictions of existence, racked by guilt and seeking redemption in death, while from the Italian composer Luciano Berio, we will have the chance to hear Requies, from 1984, a heartfelt homage written by the composer when faced with the death of his ex-wife, the famous singer Cathy Berberian.
