Gardens of Belém Print
There’s nothing more refreshing for city-dwellers than a day out in contact with nature. It feels great to leave the noise of cars behind and forget the hectic pace of daily routine. To have a picnic on the grass and hear birds chirping, to read a book in the shade of a tree or wander aimlessly – these small pleasures add to our wellness. The Belém Gardens route offers the chance to do this with two of the oldest, most beautiful gardens in Lisbon: the Botanical Garden of Ajuda, the first of its kind in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe, and the fascinating Tropical Botanical Garden, with its exotic species and remnants of the construction for the Portuguese World Exhibition, located by the Jerónimos Monastery since 1912.
But Belém has much more to offer! The Ducla Soares Garden, located on the S. Jerónimo hill near the Belém Tower, offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the river Tagus and can be easily reached on foot or by bus. There are also three other gardens in Belém with names connected to the Discoveries – Afonso de Albuquerque Garden, Vasco da Gama Garden and Praça do Império (Imperial Square)
