Presentation
In 1906 a colonial garden was built by royal decree in the Greenhouses of the Count of Farrobo in Laranjeiras to support the scientific training of students of the Colonial Agricultural College. Six years later it was transferred to the ‘Cerca of the Palace of Belém’, where it can still be found today under the current name of Tropical Botanical Gardens. In 1940, it hosted the Colonial Section of the Portuguese World Exhibition. At approximately seven-hectares in size, the gardens features a lake, greenhouses, hundreds of botanical exotic species, and a building from the 1600s - the palace of the Counts of Calheta. The Tropical Botanical Gardens are one of the richest and most welcoming gardens of the capital, and a paradise for nature lovers.
