Maritime Ports

The Maritime Ports of Alcântara and Rocha de Conde de Óbidos were designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and were commissioned for the Bicentennial celebrations, but due to several setbacks they were only opened in 1943 and 1948 respectively. The ports, which are considered key examples of twentieth century Portuguese architecture, were also decorated with triptychs by the painter Almada Negreiros. At the time, the painter’s involvement was questioned due to budget constraints. However, once these questions were overcome, Almada was able to produce some of his most acclaimed works. After he concluded his work, Almada apparently said, “I believe I have never performed better, nor made a piece any more my own.”
