Designed by the Italian Giovanni Carlo Biblienna and finished under the supervision of Mateus Vicente de Oliveira, the Church of Memory (also known as Church of our lady of Livramento and S. José) was built in memory of the attempt on the life of King D. José, which took place in the vicinity. Located halfway across the Belém hillside, a few hundred meters above the famous ‘Pastéis de Belém’ and the Botanical Tropical Garden, this church is a baroque temple of neoclassical features. The remains of Marquês de Pombal can be found here since 1923.
