This monument, located behind the ‘Pastéis de Belém’, marks the tragic destiny of D. José de Mascarenhas, the 8^th Duke of Aveiro, who was accused of an attempt on D. José’s life here and later tortured along with other members of the high nobility. Built in 1759, the monument bears an inscription explaining the reason for the demolition of the Ducal Palace, the salting of the land (so that nothing here would ever grow again) and the ban on any new construction in the area.
