This was the location of the “Fábrica do Gás Belém” (Belém Gas Plant) until the mid-twentieth century. It was the landscape architect António Viana Barreto who conceived its re-organization and construction. He created a garden in a modernist style for this iconic area, paying special attention to the species of trees planted here. It is surrounded by the Belém Tower, the monument to the first aerial crossing of the Atlantic Ocean “Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral”, by the Bom Sucesso fort and by the memorial to the soldiers who died at the Ultramar.
